“Different Eyes” by Steve Chalke

This was definitely an interesting book to review.  There were definitely some good points and some things I didn’t like.  One of the things I thoroughly enjoyed about this book was Chalke’s interpretation of the commandments.  Most people, like myself, interpret the Ten Commandments as “Do this or you’ll die” which is the truth, but not the whole truth.  God gave us the law so that we can actually relate to Him.  As Chalke explains these aren’t rules because Yahweh says so.  God is revealing Himself as ‘I AM: the God who is compassionate, merciful, loving, caring, patient.  This is how you can be like me and live the same way.’  I have never thought of it like that, so that was good.

One thing that I did not like about the book was the fence Chalke rode.  Specifically, on the issue of Homosexuality.  He introduces the subject, but then gives two letters to the Reader and leaves it for the reader to make up his/her mind.  On issues like this, I really wanted to hear his thoughts on the subject, not make up my own mind.  Overall, it was an OK book.  Not the best book I’ve ever read, but definitely not the worst.

I did receive this book for free to review thanks to Zondervan.

What have we become?

As I sit here I am not sure what I want to write about.  I haven’t written anything for a few days and what I have written has been more of papers and articles rather than something from me.  I am appalled at what is going on not only in our country, but what is happening all over the world.

To begin with, in this past election California had a vote whether or not to continue allowing gay marriage.  Proposition 8 was a California ballot proposition that changed the state Constitution to restrict the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman and eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry.  Proposition 8 passed with regrets to the homosexual agenda in the state of California.  Due to the fact that it didn’t pass people have been losing their jobs because they voted for proposition 8[1].

If things continue the way they are going to continue, and if God does not intervene, I am afraid of what is going to happen to our country.  If people are losing their jobs in the secular world, you can imagine what they are going to be doing to the people that claim to be Christians.  In fact, in Eaton County, Michigan a church was protested because they were a church.  The group was called “Bash Back” and they are considered a gay anarchist group.

This group began to protest outside of the church early last Sunday morning.  They handed out fliers and some of them even went inside to the church.  About 40 minutes into the service they got up and ran to their cars to disrupt the service.  After the police arrived they questioned the rest of the people that were protesting[2].  Is this what is going to happen to the churches that stay with what the Bible says about Homosexuality?  If we preach against homosexuality will we be taken in to jail for “hate speech?”  I shudder at the thought of that day coming.

Around the world things are not looking much better.  A sect of Hindus has been paying off people with money, liquor, chickens, and fuel.  Pastors have a reward of $250 on their head and for any other Christian they get the aforementioned things.  India’s communist party has estimated more than 500 Christians have died for their faith[3].

To begin with, as I read this article and others like it I am shocked at how selfish I am.  I live in a country that I eat 3 meals a day, sleep on a comfortable bed, watch TV, have my own laptop, I could even order pizza with TIVO [4] and there are people in Orissa dying for their faith!!!  What have we become that we are more worried, IN AMERICA, for the homosexual agenda and we could almost care less what happens to American Christians in other parts of the world!  What kind of people have we become?!

I am broken at the state of our country.  We see the stock market drop and all we see is out retirement fund leaving.  We see Proposition 8 going through and people get fired, but when people in different countries die for their faith, what do we do?  We do nothing.  Our news networks will maybe give them a 2 minute section and then move on.  How selfish are we?
